In short: Canned Responses & Email Templates stores your templates locally on your own device. It does not read, collect, or transmit your emails or messages, and there is no account. The extension sends no data at all by default — the only optional exception is anonymous usage statistics you can turn on, which never include any message or template content.
What the extension stores
The extension saves the data you create — your templates (titles, bodies, shortcuts, tags, favorites) and your settings (hotkey, theme, backup preferences) — using your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local). This data lives on your device.
What the extension does not do
- It does not read, scan, collect, store, or transmit the content of your emails or messages — ever, regardless of any setting.
- It does not require an account or sign-in.
- It does not include advertising or third-party advertising trackers.
- By default it sends no data to us or any server. The only exception is the optional anonymous usage statistics described below, which are off until you turn them on.
Optional usage analytics (off by default)
To understand which features are useful and where to improve, the extension includes an optional setting — "Share anonymous usage stats" in the options page — that is turned off by default. You can turn it on or off at any time.
When (and only when) you turn it on, the extension sends a small number of anonymous, aggregate events to our analytics provider (PostHog):
- What is sent: event names such as "picker opened" and "template inserted", which site they happened on (Gmail or LinkedIn), and a random ID that is not linked to your name, email, or any account.
- What is never sent: the content of your templates (titles or bodies), and the content of any email or message — none of it leaves your device.
If you leave the setting off, the extension transmits nothing.
Permissions and why they're needed
- Storage — to save your templates and settings locally on your device.
- Context menus — to provide the right-click "Save selection as template" option.
- Site access to mail.google.com and linkedin.com — so the extension can insert a template into the message box you're typing in. It only inserts the text you choose; it does not read or send your messages.
Your data and your control
You can export your templates to a JSON file at any time as a backup, and import them later. Because the data is stored locally, uninstalling the extension removes it from your device — we recommend exporting a backup before uninstalling. Clearing your browser's extension data will also remove it.
Third parties
The extension does not share data with any third parties, because it does not collect or transmit your data in the first place.
About this website
This marketing website (the pages on this domain) is separate from the extension and uses privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics to count visits and see which pages lead to installs. It does not use advertising cookies and does not track you across other websites. The extension itself remains completely analytics-free, exactly as described above.
Children's privacy
The extension is intended for general business use and is not directed to children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected in the extension's store listing.
